STANFORD, Calif. – James Roberts, Mike Mangrum and Scott Sakaguchi scored 12 consecutive team points to pace the 17th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team to a 22-14 win over Stanford Sunday at Maples Pavilion.
The Beavers battled back from a late deficit for the second consecutive dual to pull out the win, improving to 9-2 this season.
Roberts (133 pounds), Mangrum (141) and Sakaguchi (149) all picked up major decisions to end the day. Roberts was an 8-0 winner over Jordan Bryan, followed by Mangrum, who 16-6 over Alex Manley to become the season Beaver with 30 victories this season.
Clayton Jack (heavyweight) became the first to do so when he defeated Dan Scherer, 3-1.
Up 18-14 with one bout remaining, the Beavers had yet to officially gain the win but Sakaguchi left no doubt when he was a 9-1 winner over Timmy Boone. His win was his 29th of the season and extended his win streak to eight bouts.
The Beavers got into a deficit midway through the dual. The teams started at 157 pounds where RJ Pena was an 8-2 winner over Garrett Schaner. But Bret Baumbach (165), Nick Amuchastegui (174) and Spence Patrick (184) won via decision, technical fall and decision over Joe Latham, Cody Weishoff and Ty Vinson, respectively, to take an 11-3 lead.
Jack and Taylor Meeks, who propelled the Beavers to an 18-16 win over Boise State Friday by winning two consecutive bouts, also won Sunday and helped the Beavers to get within one. Meeks was a 14-1 major decision victor over Alan Yen at 197 and Jack won his 30th bout of the year – and 112th of his career – with the 3-1 win over Scherer.
Stanford's Ryan Mango downed Pat Rollins, 10-6, at 125 pounds to get the Cardinal to a four-point advantage, but the OSU trio finished off the bout and ensured the Beavers would gain their ninth win of the season.
The Beavers will not compete this week as a team due to Oklahoma's cancellation of a dual that was scheduled for Friday night at Gill Coliseum
