CORVALLIS, Ore. – Pat Rollins won his third consecutive bout via pin to pace the 17th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team to 35-9 win over Northern Colorado Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
Rollins' pin was his eighth of the season and 21st victory overall and opened the match with the Bears in front of 814 fans. Later, RJ Pena (157 pounds) and Clayton Jack (heavyweight) also won via falls as the Beavers took home eight individual wins on the night to improve to 6-2 this season.
The win also gave head coach Jim Zalesky his 199th career victory. He will have an opportunity for No. 200 on Sunday against North Dakota State. That would make him the 13th active Division-I head coach to reach that milestone.
Rollins, Pena and Jack all earned their pins in the second period, while Cody Weishoff (174) and Taylor Meeks (197) won by major decisions to give the Beavers the 26-point victory.
Pena's pin was his 18th of the season – putting him one shy of tying for the OSU sophomore record – and the 31st of his career. He downed Northern Colorado's Charlie McMartin in 4:19. Pena is 23-7 on the year.
Jack continued his impressive season with a pin in 4:29 over Henry Chirino to end the dual. Jack jumped to 27-1 this season and 109-35 for his career; the 109 victories are 15th-most in team history.
Weishoff's major decision, 10-1 over Josh VanTine, was his first since Jan. 1. He improved to 12-11 on the year and 1-1 at 174 pounds after moving up from 165. Ty Vinson, who was at 174 pounds until last weekend, was an 8-3 winner over Patrick Gomez at 184, pushing his mark to 17-10 in 2011-12.
Meeks snapped a four-bout losing streak with an 11-1 win over Nick Bayer. Up 7-1 entering the final seconds, Meeks picked up a three-point near fall and riding time to push his win to a major decision.
OSU won two other bouts via decisions. Mike Mangrum joined Jack in the 27-win club with a 7-4 victory over Casey Cruz at 141 points, while Scott Sakaguchi matched Mangrum with his own 7-4 win at 149 pounds. He defeated Justin Gonzalez to improve to 26-5 this season.
That matches Sakaguchi's win total from the 2010-11 campaign.
The Beavers are slated to host North Dakota State Sunday at 2 p.m. PT. Because the Feb. 3 dual against Oklahoma has been canceled, Sunday's event will be the Beavers' senior day. Jack, Garrett Drucker and Jason Lara will be honored prior.
Tickets may be purchased over the phone (1-800-GOBEAVS) or in person. Fans are also invited to purchase them online at osubeavers.com and print them off at home before arriving at Gill Coliseum.
