CORVALLIS, Ore. - Emery Welshman and Alex Penny scored one goal each and three Beaver keepers combined to make four saves as the Oregon State men's soccer team shutout Trinity Western of British Columbia on Wednesday evening, 2-0.
Welshman, seeing his first action as a Beaver after transferring from Siena College, pressured Trinity Western goalie Andrew Fink from the start. The reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Year fired off five shots in the contest and opened the scoring in the 39th minute after working himself free on the right side. His initial shot was blocked by Fink, but the keeper couldn't corral the ball and Welshman put home the rebound with a low strike to the far post to put Oregon State on top, 1-0.
"It's always good for a forward who is new to a squad to get on the scoresheet," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said. "He had plenty of other chances as well. Emery is a talent and you can see that. At the end of the day you want that kind of talent to shine through so it was good to see him get on the scoresheet."
In the second half, Penny padded the lead for the home team in the 75th minute. The junior forward used his speed to cut around the goalie and guide a six-yard shot into the back of the net to make the score, 2-0.
Oregon State was able to get a large number of players some action in what was a physical contest. The two teams were whistled for a combined 24 fouls and a pair of yellow cards were issued.
"We're getting 17 guys minutes, we rotated three goalkeepers and we still have about four of five guys coming back from pre-existing injuries," Simmons said. "Having said all that I think we're making the right steps [in advance of the regular season]."
The Beavers will wrap up their exhibition slate with another home matchup on August 22. Oregon State will take on Western Washington at 7 p.m. at Paul Lorenz Field.
