Des Moines, Iowa – Junior Laura Carlyle (Kelowna, British Columbia) wrapped up the 2011 outdoor track season at the NCAA Championships, competing in the 5,000 meters on Friday evening.
“It was not the night we had hoped for,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “It's unfortunate that one race can leave a big disappointment even though her season has been the best in school history for a distance runner. The fact that two years ago she knew almost nothing about collegiate running, let alone competing at the NCAA Championships, is a big deal.
She was very disappointed last season at regionals, but she set a goal to place in the top five at the Pac-10 meet and qualify for the national meet, and she did that and more with three school records and finishing second in the 1,500 meters at the Pac-10 meet, qualifying in that race as well. So I know she and I will set even higher goals and reach them for next year.”
After just over an hour thunderstorm delay, Carlyle finished 24th in a time of 17:05.61.
Oregon State finishes the season making another big stride since the program was reinstated in 2005. With Carlyle qualifying for the NCAA Championships, she became the first female track athlete to qualify since 1988.
Women's 5,000 Meters Results (Top 5 and Oregon State Finishes): 1. Sheila Reid (Villanova) 15:37.57; 2. Emily Infeld (Georgetown) 15:38.23; 3. Abbey D'Agostino (Dartmouth) 15:40.69; 4. Jordan Hasay (Oregon) 15:41.00; 5. Kathy Kroeger (Stanford) 15:45.55; 24. Laura Carlyle (Oregon State) 17:05.61.
