Philadelphia – The Oregon State wrestling team, led by senior Colby Covington's fifth place finish at 174 pounds, recorded its best finish in a decade at the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships with a 21st placing with 26.0 team points in the Wells Fargo Center.
Oregon State started the final day of competition automatically moving to 21st, capitalizing on a Wyoming wrestler not making weight at the start of the day – costing the Cowboys 14 team points – with the same 25.0 points it ended Friday with.
Covington was unable to score any offensive points in the opening match of the day against No. 3 Mack Lewnes of Cornell, scoring four off escapes and tallying one off of Lewnes' stalling. A final 12-5 decision by Lewnes moved Covington into the fifth place match for a rematch again No. 5 Christopher Henrich of Virginia.
He earned redemption against Henrich, scoring first in the second period on an escape point. Henrich tied the match with riding time on his side in the third period, but Covington sealed fifth place with a takedown, holding on to negate the riding time to take a 3-2 decision.
