Covington, Hanke, Arand Highlight Wrestling's Win In Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. – Colby Covington won his 12th consecutive bout and Chad Hanke and Brice Arand each picked up major decisions as the 21st-ranked Oregon State wrestling team won a non-conference dual over Northern Colorado, 35-9, on Friday night.
“We did what we needed to do tonight and I'm very happy with the way the guys responded on the road,” Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky said. “Obviously Colby wrestled well and Chad and Brice both picked up major decisions. It was our last dual on the road this season and we went out on a high note. Unfortunately, Clayton (Jack) and Mike (Mangrum) didn't get to wrestle because of forfeits but they were outstanding teammates tonight.”
Northern Colorado didn't wrestle at 141 and the 285-pound classes, giving the Beavers 12 points combined. The dual started at the 197-pound class and OSU got to an early lead as Hanke defeated Nick Bayer, 14-6, for his major decision. The win put Hanke at 18-9 on the season, and 3-2 in bouts decided by a major decision.
The Beavers picked up a 10-0 lead when Jack earned the forfeit, but the Bears pulled to within four, 10-6, when Sam Bauer pinned Christian Strahl (125 pounds) in 4:30.
That was, however, the closest it got all night.
Garrett Drucker won his 11th bout of the season at 133 pounds, picking up a 10-3 decision over Casey Cruz. Then Mangrum was awarded the forfeit, his first of the year, to give OSU the 19-6 advantage.
Scott Sakaguchi became the first Beaver with 20 wins this season when, at 149 pounds, he defeated Justin Gaethje, 4-1. Sakaguchi is 9-9 when bouts are decided by decisions this season.
Tanner Weiks gave UNC its final win of the night when he defeated Alex Elder, 5-2, at 157 pounds, but Jon Brascetta (165 pounds) got the Beavers rolling again with a 9-4 win over Brandon Kammerzell, putting OSU up 25-9.
Brascetta's win was the first of three-in-a-row to close out the night for the Beavers. Covington next won his 12th consecutive bout and picked up his third pin of the season when he downed Cody McAninch in six minutes. Seven of his 12 consecutive wins have earned bonus points but it was the first time since Jan. 21 when he won by major decision in the Beavers' loss to Cal Poly.
Arand closed out OSU's night with the team's second major decision. He earned 2:44 of riding time to take a 12-2 victory over Eric Brennan at 184 pounds.
The Beavers moved up to 9-5-2 this season with the win while Northern Colorado dropped to 1-7-0. The win gave the Beavers 10 consecutive victories over the Bears.
Oregon State next returns home for the final regular-season weekend of 2010-11. The Beavers take on Arizona State Friday night at 7 p.m. and Cal State Fullerton Sunday at 2 p.m.
