Jack Wins In Reno; Beavers Take Third

Dec. 18, 2011
RENO, Nev. – Oregon State senior Clayton Jack kept his winning streak alive with five wins en route to a championship in the heavyweight class at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday. The Beavers, meanwhile, finished third overall as a team, just behind No. 2 Wyoming as Oklahoma State took the championship.
Jack went 5-0 on Sunday to improve to 20-0 overall and win his second consecutive tournament title, following the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational two weeks ago. His championship bout was supposed to come against Chad Hanke, who is redshirting for the Beavers, but Jack won by forfeit.
Jack recorded a fall to open the day and outscored his other three opponents by a combined 28-12 score. His five wins gives him 102 for his career, making him the 20th wrestler in OSU team history to reach the century mark.
He's the first to do so since Eric Jorgensen in 2001.
Mike Mangrum joined Hanke as second-place finishers while Garrett Drucker and RJ Pena each finished third, James Roberts took fourth and Scott Sakaguchi fifth in helping the Beavers to a total of 105 team points. Wyoming, who Oregon State will see at Gill Coliseum on Jan. 15, was second with 115.5 points.
No. 1 Oklahoma State scored a total of 166 points.
All told, 18 different Beavers wrestled in Reno, with five unattached – including Hanke. Of the 13 who wrestled attached, only 10 were able to count toward the official team standings.
And of the 13 who competed attached, five placed in the top six of their respective weight classes. Both Hanke and Roberts were unattached and placed.
Mangrum took second after going 4-1 over the one-day event, losing to Cal Poly's Boris Novachkov in the finale. Mangrum improved to 18-2 on the year after compiling three falls and a decision as the 141-pound bracket's No. 2 seed.
Only Novachkov was able to stop Mangrum, improving to 2-1 against him this season. The two are expected to meet again at the Pac-12 Championships in February as the top two contenders for the league title.
Both Drucker and Pena placed third in their respective weight classes, and each did so in impressive fashion, albeit it in different styles.
Drucker went 7-1 on Sunday, but won six consecutive bouts in the wrestleback rounds to stay alive and finish third. He defeated Roberts in the 133-pound third-place bout, 7-2. Roberts went 4-2 himself, and is 12-3 this season, as an attached wrestler, although he did not accumulate points for Oregon State.
Drucker is now 11-3 on the year.
Pena went 5-1 at 157 pounds and won all five bouts via pins. His only loss came via a pin at the hands of Boise State's George Ivanov. Pena recovered to take his final two bouts by pin over Arizona State's Victor DeJesus at 1:41 and his third-place win was over Michigan State's Anthony Jones in 4:52.
Pena is 19-5 this season with 15 pins, which is already good for sixth-best in a single season amongst sophomores – and tied for 18th regardless of class - in Oregon State history. His 28 career pins, meanwhile, are tied for 12th in team history.
Sakaguchi was the final Beaver to place as he took fifth at 149 pounds. The sophomore started the day with three consecutive wins and went 4-2 overall, defeating Southern Oregon's Jimmy Eggemeyer, 5-1, for fifth.
Sakaguchi's 4-2 run gives him an 18-4 mark this season.
Amongst other OSU wrestlers who competed attached but did not place were Pat Rollins at 125 who went 3-2, Cody Weishoff (165) who went 2-2, Ty Vinson (174) finished 3-2 and John Tuck (184) was 2-2.
Alex Elder (157) was the highest finisher amongst OSU unattached wrestlers as he went 4-2. Seth Thomas was 2-2 at 165.
The Beavers are off until the new year when they compete at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Jan. 1 and 2.
