SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – By the time the heavyweight bout commenced at Cuesta College on Sunday, the 16th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team's 33-6 lead was insurmountable as the Beavers had clinched their fourth dual win of the season.
But the real suspense didn't begin until the third period of Clayton Jack's bout with Atticus Disney to cap off the Pac-12 meet. Down 1-0 entering the third, Jack scored three points and held off a late Disney escape to improve to 15-0 this season, the lone Beaver with a perfect record intact.
Jack's win highlighted the Beavers' 36-6 win over Cal Poly with RJ Pena and Taylor Meeks adding pins in the dominating victory. OSU defeated Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield by a combined mark of 81-10.
Of the Beavers' 17 individual wins over the weekend, 15 earned bonus points. Of those 15, six came via falls.
It's still early in the season, but Jack still has the ability to become the sixth Beaver in team history with a perfect season record. He defeated Disney for the second time this season after posting a takedown and an escape in the third. Disney scored one point with an escape with eight seconds remaining but it was too late to overcome Jack.
Pena's pin was his second of the weekend and team-leading 10th of the season. He forced Elijah Jackson to the pin at the 2:24 mark of the 157-pound bout, giving the Beavers an 18-3 team lead.
Meeks, at 197 pounds, recorded the Beavers second pin of the day when, at 4:19, he downed Ryan Smith. Meeks has wrestled in four Pac-12 bouts this season and has recorded four pins en route to a 13-2 season record.
Oregon State's Pat Rollins (125 pounds) and Garrett Drucker (133) jumped out to big individual leads and kept Cal Poly completely off the board. Rollins picked up a 11-0 major decision over Michael Clemmensen at 125 pounds and Drucker followed that with a 14-0 major decision over Brandon Rocha.
The first of two bouts featuring undefeated Oregon State wrestlers came at 141 when Mike Mangrum took on Boris Novachkov. Neither wrestler picked up a point in the first period and Novachkov took a 1-0 lead into the third. He scored a three-point near fall and an escape; Mangrum was held to an escape and a takedown in the two-point loss.
Scott Sakaguchi earned a 17-4 major decision over Adam Aslam at 149 pounds, while Cody Weishoff did not compete as Cal Poly forfeited at 165 pounds.
John Tuck picked up a 6-5 decision over Sean Dougherty at 184 pounds to improve to 7-6 in 2011-12.
Ryan DesRoches (174) defeated Ty Vinson, 3-0, at 174 pounds for Cal Poly's second individual win of the day.
Oregon State takes off the next week before competing at the Tournament Reno of Champions next Sunday.
