PERSONAL--Born 3/29/79 in Long Beach, CA...son of Larry and Gayle Cookus...his father is a teacher and his mother is a secretary...he has one sister, Kelly, 21...Jake is in the College of Business and he is a business administration major at OSU...he graduated from Roseburg with a 3.6 GPA and was a National Honor Society member...his biggest athletic thrill as a prep was winning back-to-back football championships at Roseburg High School...he has three other prep teammates on the OSU roster--Mark Walsh, Chris Gibson and Matt Morrow.
OSU—(2001—Senior)—Jake has played in all 35 Beaver games in three years for OSU, including starting four games…in that time, Jake has produced 277 defensive points…he has 57 tackles, including 40 solo…he has 7 career interceptions, 8 passes broken up, 2 fumble recoveries and a blocked punt…Jake has been a solid player for the Beavers the last three years…in many ways, he has been like a utility player in baseball…he will play anywhere he can help…Jake had the best spring of his OSU career and will return to fall camp listed as the No. 1 free safety…Jake is a very instinctive player and seems to have a nose for the football…he is a former high school quarterback and he has been a “quarterback” in the secondary for the Beavers…Jake posted impressive numbers in the weight room during winter conditioning…he registered a 440-pound lift in the squat, 340 in the bench press and 286.6 in the power clean.
OSU--(2000-Junior)--Jake enters his junior season having participated in 23 games for OSU as a backup safety and special teams athlete...Jake has been a very valuable backup player for the Beavers in two seasons...Jake spent the entire spring as OSU's No. 1 free safety with incumbent starter, Calvin Carlyle out while recovering from shoulder surgery...Jake performed extremely well during the spring and he is capable of stepping in at either safety position and give the Beavers a quality performance...he will report to fall camp listed as the backup free safety behind Carlyle, but also a player who will receive plenty of playing time...in winter conditioning, Jake posted weightlifting bests of 410 in the back squat, 320 in the bench press and 286 in the power clean.
OSU--(1999-Sophomore)--Jake earned a letter by playing in all 11 games as a walk-on freshman and he will continue to be a walk-on in 1999...Jake had a very solid spring practice and had 5 solo tackles for the winning White team in the Spring game at Hillsboro...Jake opened spring drills as the No. 3 strong safety and concluded the spring as the No. 2 strong safety...in the weight room, Jake has produced personal bests of 300 pounds in the hang clean, 330 in the bench press, 390 in the back squat and 235 in the incline...his best vertical jump mark is 26.50 inches and has been tested for only 6.55 percent body fat.
(1998-Freshman)--Jake entered OSU at winter quarter as a walk-on and participated in the winter program and spring practice...he was listed No. 4 on the depth chart at halfback (strong safety) following spring drills...came back to fall camp and played very well in preseason scrimmages and earned himself a spot on special team units...played in all 11 games and posted 25 defensive points, including 4 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles and a recovered fumble in the California game.
AIR FORCE ACADEMY--(1997)--Jake was recruited by the Air Force Academy, but left after one quarter.
ROSEBURG HIGH SCHOOL--(1993-96)--Jake earned three letters in football, four in track and two in basketball at Roseburg High School...played football for Coach Thurman Bell and was a starting quarterback and defensive back...the Indians were 28-0 while he was Roseburg's quarterback...was an All-Southern Oregon Conference pick at quarterback and defensive back his senior year, plus he earned first-team all-state honors on offense and defense by The Oregonian...selected by USA Today as the Player of the Year in the State of Oregon... played in the Shrine All-Star game in the summer of 1997...as a senior, rushed for 943 yards, averaging 8.0 per game and scored 17 touchdowns on the ground...completed 87 of 147 passes for 1,449 yards and 18 touchdowns and was intercepted 5 times.
