Seven Beavers Take Titles In Southern Oregon

ASHLAND, Ore. – Seven Oregon State wrestlers took home titles in their respective weight classes at the Best of the West Tournament in Ashland, hosted by Southern Oregon.
James Roberts (133 pounds), Mike Mangrum (141), Scott Sakaguchi (149), RJ Pena (157), Seth Thomas (165), Ty Vinson (174) and Taylor Meeks (197) all claimed first over the weekend. Additionally, the Beavers had the ability for an eighth first place finish but Clayton Jack and OSU redshirt Chad Hanke forfeited the final match in the heavyweight class.

Roberts earned a 5-3 decision over fellow OSU wrestler Jason Lara to win at 133 pounds. He opened Sunday with a bye, then a major decision and a pin before downing Lara, who was competing at 133 for the first time.
Mangrum started off the season strong with his title at 149, defeating Shane Yacuta from Clackamas Community College, with a pin just 1:44 in. His first two wins also came via pins after also opening with a bye.
Sakaguchi downed teammate Nick Schlager, 7-1, to claim the title at 149. He opened with a bye, then a major decision before winning 7-1 to advance to the title bout against Sclager.
Pena, wrestling at 157 for the first time in his career after redshirting last season, pinned teammate Alex Elder in 1:06. It was his third pin of the day.
Thomas made his collegiate debut at the tournament, and did so in grand fashion, defeating teammate Cody Weishoff via a 6-4 decision. The freshman had picked up two consecutive pins to open the day.
Vinson pinned Clackamas' Trent Noon in 3:34 on Sunday in the title bout to extend the Beavers' good day. He started off the day with two consecutive byes before getting a technical fall and then a pin in the title bout.
Meeks won via technical fall and a pin to advance to the final bout of the afternoon. He was a major decision winner, 16-2, over Michael Sojka from Stanford.
The Beavers compete at Gill Coliseum for the first time on Friday in a dual meet against Simon Fraser that starts at 7 p.m. PT.
Season tickets and single-meet tickets are now available. Season tickets for adults $46 and senior/youth are $34. Single-match tickets for adults are $7 and $5 for seniors/youth.
