SEATTLE, Wash. - On a frigid night in Seattle that saw temperatures drop into the mid-30's, the Oregon State men's soccer team struggled to find its groove early against a Washington squad fighting for its tournament hopes, as the Beavers dropped a 3-0 road decision to the No. 19 Huskies on Friday night.
With the result, OSU ends its season with a 5-11-2 overall record and a 3-6-1 mark in Pac-12 play.
The Beavers were forced to play short-handed from the start when the team's leading facilitator and second-leading goal scorer, Emery Welshman, went down with an ankle injury in the 18th minute, forcing a tactical switch. The Huskies would take advantage soon thereafter, putting home scores in the 22nd and 31st minutes to claim a two-goal lead.
"The game changed for us when Emery got hurt," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said. "We had to change our attacking scheme and got caught on the first two goals, but we played a hell of a second half, controlled a lot of the play and just couldn't quite `pick the lock'."
Washington got on the board at 21:37 when Jacob Hustedt weaved his way through the Beaver defense and directed the ball toward the net. His chance was deflected right to the feet of teammate Quinton Beasley, who opportunistically sent home his chance for the 1-0 lead.
The Huskies tacked on another when Jamie Finch launched a service from his defensive half and Hustedt slipped past Oregon State's back line and tapped his chance through to the back of the goal to give Washington a 2-0 edge.
The Beavers were not without their own opportunities, however, especially near the end of the first half and well into the second period. With 9:43 left until the intermission, Roberto Farfan worked himself free in the middle of the pitch, but was taken down from behind. His free kick from 30-yards out crept just over the crossbar.
As the second half began, a refocused OSU side dominated possession, continually sending players into the box and generating chaos in front of the goal. Farfan had a shot blocked from within the box in the 70th minute blocked by the defense and as the game was winding down, Will Seymore took a free kick from in front of the Beaver bench and forced Washington's keeper to make an acrobatic leaping save to preserve the clean sheet.
The Huskies added an insurance mark in the 81st minute off of a corner to make the final score, 3-0.
"I think a lot of the differences are going to be in the little details," Simmons said. "We have the personnel to fix those details. We're going to miss [our seniors] Steve [Spangler] and John [Swenson], but we're excited to continue to develop these kids for next year."
Spangler made six saves in his final game in the Orange and Black, ending his season with 74 and 250 for his career, good for third place in school history. Welshman's seven assists in his first year in Corvallis place him in a tie for seventh in single-season history at Oregon State.
The Beavers should have a number of players earn All-Pac-12 honors when the teams are announced next week by the conference office.
