SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Oregon State men's soccer team out-shot a conference foe for the sixth time in the last eight games, but was unable to break through on the score sheet, falling by a score of 3-0 in a road match against San Diego State (10-3-2, 4-2-0 Pac-12) on Friday afternoon.
The loss drops the Beavers' record to 5-9-2 on the year and 3-4-1 in Pac-12 play.
The game was a fairly evenly matched affair in every category but shots. Oregon State fired off 14 chances to San Diego State's nine; the Beavers put six of those on goal, the Aztecs five; and OSU took five corners to SDSU's six.
"Statistically everything was pretty even, but the score," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said. "And unfortunately that's the one that counts."
Oregon State had a couple of good looks in the first half around the 25-minute mark off the foot of Colin Mitchell. At 24:28 the junior midfielder had a nice run at the goal, but his shot from 15 yards out was blocked by an Aztec defender. One minute later, Mitchell again found himself in some space off of a Beaver corner, but couldn't get a solid touch of the ball and his shot from eight yards out went wide right.
San Diego State got on the board 10 seconds before halftime when Oregon State was issued a yellow card and Jose Altimirano sent his free kick into the box. Keeper Steve Spangler came out of net and directed the ball away from the goal, but the Aztecs' John Pegg was able to chip it over a scrambling defense from 24 yards away to give SDSU a 1-0 advantage heading into intermission.
The Beavers put even more pressure on Aztec keeper Blake Hylen in the second half, shooting nine times to SDSU's three, and forcing him to make four saves. Hylen made six total saves in the 90 minutes to earn the shutout.
Oregon State had a number of quality chances before San Diego State was able to extend its lead. Alex Eckerson (51:20) and Roberto Farfan (63:35) pushed a pair of shots just right of the goal and Emery Welshman (58:05) was denied by a diving save to keep the Beavers off the board.
San Diego State added two goals in the 71st and 74th minutes to take a 3-0 edge and a rocket from 16 yards away off the boot of Oregon State's Chris Harms was flicked away at the last second by Hylen in the 79th minute to preserve the clean sheet.
"We got scored on three restarts," Simmons said. "I thought we were pretty hard done by to get a free kick called with so little time in the [first] half. Out-shooting your opponent and at times out-playing and out-competing doesn't' equate to a win and 3-0 is a pretty hard result. We just have to keep tightening the belt and move on to Sunday."
Oregon State wraps up its Southern California swing when it takes on UCLA on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Los Angeles.
