CORVALLIS, Ore. – The 13th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team scored bonus points in three of its four wins Friday night against Cal Poly, but was narrowly defeated by the 24th-ranked Mustangs in front of 1,229 fans at legendary Gill Coliseum.
Jason Lara, Scott Sakaguchi and Colby Covington each won by major decision and Brice Arand added a decision to round out OSU's victories, but Cal Poly's six decision victories was enough for the three-point victory. Oregon State, with the loss, dropped to 7-4-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in Pacific-10 Conference duals.
The Mustangs, meanwhile, improved to a perfect 6-0 in 2010-11.
Lara and Sakaguchi each won their team-leading 17th victories of the season while Covington extended his winning streak to nine bouts. Arand improved to 17-8 this season and snapped a two-bout losing streak.
The Beavers fell behind early, 6-0, with Alex Elder (157 pounds) and Jon Brascetta (165) losing the night's first two bouts by decision, 11-5 and 5-3, respectively.
Covington and Arand, however, got the Beavers on the board and the lead. Covington (174) improved to 5-0 in major decisions this season when he downed Steven Vasquez, 21-10. Covington is also 11-0 in his two-year career in bouts decided by major decisions.
Arand (184) gave OSU a 7-6 lead in the next bout when he defeated Kelan Bragg, 5-0. It marked his third win this season when shutting out an opponent.
The 7-6 lead after Arand's victory marked OSU's final lead of the night, however, as Cal Poly's Ryan Smith (197) and Atticus Disney (heavyweight) defeated Chad Hanke, 5-3, and Clayton Jack, 12-6, in the next two bouts.
Lara stepped up at 125 pounds and defeated Brandon Rocha, 12-3, earning his sixth major decision victory this season.
Garrett Drucker and Filip Novachkov started the first of two down-to-the-wire bouts, when at 133 points, the Cal Poly Mustang was victorious, 6-4. The two were tied, 4-4, until 10 seconds remained in the third period and Novachkov earned a two-point takedown to earn the win.
Mike Mangrum and Boris Novachkov were in a similar situation at 141 pounds and remained tied at two through the end of regulation time. However, Novachkov earned 1:30 of riding time to pick up the 3-2 win.
Sakaguchi (149) closed out the Beavers's night with a 12-3 win over Brandon Rocha, picking up four team points. However, Cal Poly had already clinched the dual after the 141-pound dual which sent the Mustangs to a then-18-11 lead.
For Sakaguchi, it was his fourth major decision win of the season and he improved to 8-5 in dual-meet bouts.
The team returns to Gill Coliseum Sunday when OSU hosts Stanford at 2 p.m. PT. Live stats and live video are available on osubeavers.com and tickets still remain. They can be purchased online at osubeavers.com or by calling 1-800-GOBEAVS.
