The Oregon State men's golf team, ranked 21st in the nation by GolfStat, completed the first day of competition at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational tied for eighth place.
"Overall I'm pleased with how we played today," first-year head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "At the end of the day we gave away too many shots, we've got to learn to finish rounds. We'll work on cleaning up a few mistakes. But each of our guys had moments of really good play and I'm very encouraged."
Oregon State struggled early in the day sitting at +7 through nine holes, despite a stellar two-under-par performance from junior Jonnie Motomochi. But the Beavers rebounded after making the turn with fellow juniors Morten Madsen and Alex Moore picking up their play to finish the round. Madsen was two-under and Moore was one-under, including four straight birdies, on the backside. Motomochi finished the opening round with a 2-under 70.
Three OSU golfers posted better scores in the afternoon round to help the Beavers shave nine strokes off of the team score from the first round. Moore shot OSU's only subpar round of the afternoon, carding a 1-under 71 to finish the day with a 5-over (78-71) 149. Sophomore Nick Sherwood and redshirt freshman David Fink fired even par rounds in the afternoon and wrapped up the first day at 4-over (76-72) 148 and 7-over (79-72) 151.
Motomochi leads the Beavers through the first day at 3-over (70-75) 145 and is tied for 17th. Madsen finished at 8-over-par.
"We know what to work on," Reehoorn said. "I'm excited about the way we played overall. For the first day of competition we did okay, we'll work on cleaning up a few little mistakes. If we can play a clean round tomorrow there is an opportunity to move up the leaderboard."
The Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational is a two-day, 54-hole tournament played at the 7,034-yard, par-72 Washington National Golf Course. Thirty-six holes were played on Monday with the final 18 coming on Tuesday.
