CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team fell to the No. 19 Portland Pilots 3-1 Wednesday night at Merlo Field in front of a crowd of 1,860. It was the final exhibition match before the Beavers head into regular season play a week from tonight.
Portland took the early lead with a goal in the 13th minute of the match and added another goal quickly in the 14th minute to take an early 2-0 lead. The Pilots added one more in the 70th minute when Steven Evans split the Oregon State defense and shot it past the keeper to take a 3-0 lead.
"The first goal by Portland put us on our back foot and I'm a little disappointed on how we responded with allowing Portland to get another goal quickly," head coach Steve Simmons said following the match. "We just can't concede in that manner but the nice thing is that those things are in our control to fix."
The Beavers got on the board with 18 minutes left in the second half off of a free kick following a inadvertent hand ball by a Pilot defender just outside the goal box. Transfer Roberto Farfan knocked in the goal off a Brian Ramsey assist. Ramsey tapped the ball to Farfan on the free kick who blasted a shot that deflected off a Pilot defender and into the upper left corner to bring the match to 3-1 in favor of the Pilots.
"Roberto (Farfan) made a nice play that got stuff going for us late but it was a little too late," Simmons said. "We've found a lot out about ourselves during these two exhibition matches that will help us when we get into live season action."
Oregon State had its chances throughout the match but was only able to knock in the one goal. They ended with 11 shots with only three coming on goal. The Beavers outshot the Pilots 11 to eight.
Travis Sanchez led the beavers in shots attempted with four but only one came on goal. Ramsey had two shot attempts and the assist on the Farfan goal. Four other Beavers had shot attempts with two of the four coming on goal.
The Beavers will have exactly a week to work out the kinks before opening the 2010 season on the road in Kansas City, Mo. when they take on the University of Missouri at Kansas City Sept. 1 starting at 5 p.m. PST. The Beavers make their season debut at home Sept. 17 when they take on UC-Davis at Paul Lorenz Field starting at 7 p.m.
Also on Sept. 17, the Beavers will be honoring former Oregon State coaching great Jimmy Conway in a ceremony prior to the match.
