Simpson Leads OSU at Cleveland Golf Invitational

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.- - Junior Brad Simpson fired a 2-under 140 in the first two rounds of the Cleveland Golf Invitational Monday at the par-71 North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., good enough to put him in a tie for fourth place going into tomorrow's final round. The Beavers posted a first-round team total of 292 and are in eighth place at 15-over after darkness suspended the second round.
"It started raining heavily, but at worst we should finish up around one or two over par for this afternoon, which should be right there at the top as far as afternoon rounds are concerned," said head coach Brian Watts.
"We didn't play too well this morning and didn't take advantage of the par-5s, but this afternoon we grinded it out in the rain.
"The guys are used to playing in it and I was proud of them the way they played this afternoon."
Tournament host USC leads Texas by four strokes with scoring for the second round still incomplete. USC posted a first-round 283, while Texas carded a 281.
Texas' Matthew Rosenfeld leads all other individuals after firing a 7-under 135. He is three strokes ahead of both USC's Scott Oxandaboure and California's Peter Tomasulo, and just five strokes ahead of OSU's Brad Simpson with one round to play.
Freshman Ryan Gilmour was the only other Beaver to finish the second round. He posted a 10-over 152 and is in a tie for 61st.
Junior Cameron MacKenzie fired a 1-under 70 in the first round and was tied for 24th at 3-over when play was suspended.
Senior Sean Deacon opened with a 75 and is tied for 44th at 7-over, and sophomore Brian Kelley is tied for 61st after an opening round of 76.
Teams that did not finish the second round will complete it on Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. Round three will begin at 8:30 a.m.
