WAIKOLOA, Haw. - -
The Oregon State men's golf team opened the Taylor Made Invitational Wednesday with a first-round score of 298 at the par-72 Waikoloa Kings' Course in Waikoloa, Hawaii. The Beavers are in 19th place going into the second round.
Freshman Ryan Gilmour led the Beavers with a 1-under 71 and is tied for 24th place with two more rounds to play.
"Being the first tournament of the year, we expected a few struggles, but we didn't expect what happened today," head coach Brian Watts said.
"We kind of had a train wreck around the last four holes.
"The guys are out there working hard and we need to put this behind us and focus on the next two rounds. Hopefully they'll be a little more relaxed tomorrow."
Fifth-ranked Georgia Tech (Golfweek poll) came out firing and took a commanding lead Wednesday, taking advantage of the good weather and optimal scoring conditions and posting a 16-under 272. Fourth-ranked UCLA is in second place, ten shots behind the leader.
Georgia Tech's Nicholas Thompson claimed the first-round lead by firing back-to-back 32s to card an 8-under 64, four strokes ahead of Washington's Brock MacKenzie and UCLA's John Poucher.
Sophomore Brian Kelley finished with a 3-over 75 and is tied for 64th.
Senior Sean Deacon and Junior Brad Simpson are each tied at 76th after opening rounds of 76.
Junior Cameron MacKenzie opened with a 78 and is tied for 95th.
The tournament continues Thursday with second-round action beginning in the morning.
