LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Oregon State beat California-Santa Barbara 156-98 but fell to seventh-ranked UCLA 149-108 in a double dual meet Saturday to open the women's swimming season. The meet starts the Beavers' season with a 1-1 overall record and a 0-1 mark in the Pacific-10; OSU will next swim at California on Nov. 5 and at San Jose State on Nov. 6.
Saturday's other result at the double dual saw UCLA beat UCSB 156-98. "The meet was very good," OSU head coach Larry Liebowitz said. "We had three first places against UCLA."
OSU got wins against the Bruins from Kristin Huston in the 100-yard freestyle (52.83 seconds) and Courtney Eads in the 200 butterfly (2:02:87) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:36:52). The victorious relay team was OSU's B relay; the Beavers' A squad swam as an exhibition entrant and clocked in at 3:31.60, ahead of both UCLA relays which were also swimming as exhibition entrants.
"The relay was outstanding," Liebowitz said. "It was a huge win and we had great split times."
Eads, a freshman, started her collegiate with a win in the 200 butterfly and a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle. Eads also contributed to the winning relay team.
"Courtney's race was solid," Liebowitz said. "Her time barely missed the school record in the 200 freestyle"
Huston started her senior season with crucial win in the 100 freestyle. Huston also swam on the winning relay.
"Kristin Huston swam really well," Liebowitz said. "She may have won the same event (100 free) the past four years."
Also contributing in both meets was junior captain Christina Kinney. Kinney had two third-place finishes, one in the 200 butterfly and another in the 100 butterfly.
"Christina looks like she is ready to make the jump to the next level," Liebowitz said.
The Beavers got a win over UC-Santa Barbara after losing to them last year in the last race of their dual meet.
"Last year they beat us on the last relay," Liebowitz said. "This year we got them; it's good to get a win."
Coming away from their first competition of the season, Liebowitz remains optimistic about the Beavers' potential this year.
"Overall, the meet was perfect for us," Liebowitz said. "They got their first real taste of competition."
