CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
After sharing the lead heading into the final round at the Pac-10 Championships on Saturday, the Oregon State men's golf team had to settle for third place, as USC pulled ahead to defend its championship while Stanford edged out the Beavers for second by two strokes.
On a day when most teams struggled at the par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Club, the No. 9-ranked Trojans shot a 4-under 356 to post a 1-over 1,441 for the tournament and earn their 17th Pac-10 Championship with a 15-shot win over the Cardinal.
Stanford's Jim Seki used a pair of birdies over the final two holes to claim medalist honors.
Seki chipped in from atop a greenside mound on No. 18 to post a final-round 74 and fend off USC's Kevin Stadler and teammate Philip Rowe for a one-stroke win at 4-under 284. Seki opened with a 66 and held at least a share of the lead after each round.
OSU posted a score of 15-over 375 Saturday to total 18-over 1,458 for the tournament, 11 shots in front of fourth-place UCLA.
The Beavers finished their season by equaling their second-best Pac-10 finish in school history. OSU was third in the 1967 event in Corvallis as well as in 1973. OSU took second in 2000.
The Beavers placed four golfers in the top 20, headed by senior David Yarnes' tie for seventh. Yarnes closed with a solid 72 en route to a total of 1-over 289. The Tucson, Ariz., native finished his career with two consecutive top-10 finishes.
Third round co-leader Michael Jurgensen carded a 79 Saturday to fall from a tie with eventual winner Jim Seki of Stanford into a tie for 14th. Jurgensen, a junior from Horsholm, Denmark, finished 3-over for the tournament at 291.
Brothers Sean and Todd Deacon tied for 17th and 19th, respectively. Sean, a sophomore, carded a 75 Saturday to finish at 292, while Todd wrapped up his collegiate career with a 293.
Chance Holmes and Daren Greig rounded out the scoring for OSU, as Holmes tied for 25th at 295 and Greig posted a 304 to tie for 45th.
OSU put together its best performance of the season at the Championships, equaling its top finish of the year against some of the nation's best programs. Of the 10 teams in the field, seven were ranked among the top 50, and three were in the top 25.
In the team competition, Oregon finished fifth after posting a score of 1,471. The Ducks had three players in the top 11, including John Ellis in a tie for seventh at 289. Both Aaron Byers and Brandon Harnden tied for 11th at 290.
