SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - In a game that was eerily reminiscent of last year's contest, Santa Clara University (2-1-0) senior Jeff Stewart scored his first goal of the season to defeat Oregon State (0-3-0) by a score of 2-1 at the Diadora Classic in San Francisco, Calif.
Stewart's goal came at the 114:06 mark in the second overtime off a precise pass from >Kellen Gilmore during a penalty re-start that went directly to Stewart's head in the middle of the penalty box. The Broncos improve to 2-0-0 in overtime contests in the 2001 season while the Beavers slide to 0-2-0 in the same category.
The Broncos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Scott McLain took a cross from Gilmore and slid it past the Beavers netminder at the 7:01 mark in the first half. Gilmore's two assists on the night was a career high for one game for the sophomore.
The score remained the same at the end of the first half as Santa Clara dodged a bullet when Oregon State's Ignacio Cid missed a penalty kick with only 8:48 remaining in the half.
Oregon State tied the score in the second half as Stephen Hensor headed home a goal in the 57th minute off of two precise passes from Cid and Aaron McHardy. Following the Beavers' equalizer the two teams played back-and-forth soccer with each team getting several chances on the net.
Santa Clara outshot the Beavers 6-2 in the overtime periods, thoroughly dominating its opponent and creating scoring chances that were too numerous to stop.
