Men's Golf Takes Third At NW Collegiate

Oregon State sophomore Sean Deacon sealed his first collegiate victory with a 68 in the final round of the Northwest Collegiate Classic on Tuesday.
Deacon, playing for OSU's second-team, shot a three-round total of 8-under-par 205 at the par-71, 6,693-yard Mallard Creek Golf Club, including a career-best 67 in Monday's second round, equaling the 67 he shot in last year's Northwest Collegiate. The win was also Deacon's first top-10 finish.
"Sean had a great tournament," OSU head coach Brian Watts said. "Sean struggled a little bit towards the end of last year and had a case of burnout. We made him take a month off so he couldn't touch his golf clubs. He started playing again in July, and found out that a bad golf shot is not that important. Sean came back with a clear mind and was very focused.
"He was very excited today, as he should have been. He was finally in a position to win a golf tournament, and for him to pull through and win at such an early age will give him the confidence to compete at the highest level."
OSU's first-team captured third place with an 856, just one stroke behind second-place Washington State and 13 back of Oregon.
Junior Michael Jurgensen paced the Beavers with his fifth-place score of 2-under 211, and sophomore Daren Greig wasn't far behind, as he closed with a bang on Tuesday by firing a 68 to give him a total of 212 and a tie for eighth. Greig's 68 equaled his career-low and helped him earn his first-ever top-10 finish. Jurgensen also tied a career-low with his second-round 68.
David Yarnes tied for 32nd with a 218 while Chance Holmes shot 220 to tie for 35th. Todd Deacon tied for 50th with a 224.
"I thought we got off to a good start in the tournament on the first 18 and put ourselves in a good position. Overall, the team played well the first 18, but I believe the second round was where we lost the tournament, actually. We made some bad choices coming down the last four or five holes that cost us probably eight to ten shots. We need to make better choices out on the golf course.
"Today we played well, but then again, we made some mental mistakes that cost us second place. Being the first tournament of the year they're a little bit rusty, but we need to do two things: we need to be more patient on the course and make better decisions."
OSU's second team, consisting of James Salt, Andres Gonzales, David Williams, and David Stypula, took seventh with an 865. Salt also posted a career-low of 67 in the final round and tied for eighth at 212 to give OSU four players in the top eight overall.
Oregon won the 14-team tournament by 12 strokes, shooting 843, separating from the pack with a 6-under 278 on Tuesday.
Oregon's Chris Carnahan took second individually with a 6-under 207. Carnahan posted the low score of the tournament when he signed for a 65 on Tuesday.
Oregon State's next action comes at the William Tucker Intercollegiate on Sept. 21-22.
