DURHAM, N.C. - The Oregon State men's golf team wrapped up its third round at the NCAA Championship Saturday morning after play was suspended Friday due to heavy rain and lightning. The Beavers took advantage of the final three holes down front-nine stretch, having started their round on the back nine, to go 3-under after the rain delay and turn in a 5-over 293 for the round. OSU is in 12 place with a total of 19-over 883 heading into the final round, which will be played Saturday as well.
The Beavers trail fellow Pac-10 squad Arizona State by eight shots, and are one shot back of 11th-place Oklahoma. OSU was one of three Pac-10 schools to make the cut at the Championship.
As has been the case of late, the Beavers have had a player step up when things started to slow down, and this time it was redshirt freshman Daren Greig.
Greig led the Beavers in the third stanza, turning in an even-par 72 on the soggy 7,086-yard Duke University Golf Club. Greig was up-and-down over the his 10th-15th holes, with two birdies, two bogies and a double, but he took advantage of holes seven and nine, both par-5s, to make birdie on each and come in at even par. He is tied for 66th at 226.
Greig has been a birdie threat for the Beavers all week, leading the team with 11 - including a birdie on the par-3 fourth every day - through 54 holes. The 72 was Greig's best round of the tournament so far.
David Yarnes closed strong as well, going 1-under on the final three holes with a birdie on the par-5 seventh, on which OSU was 3-under as a team for the round. Yarnes finished with a 72 and tie for 38th at 220. The junior shot 36 on both nines.
Also lowering his score from the previous two rounds was true freshman David Williams, who went 37-37--74 to bring his total to 224. Williams birdied the par-3 eighth hole, which was his 17th, for the second day in a row to go 1-under for the final three holes after the rain delay. He also chipped out of a bunker on the seventh, which was his first shot of the morning, and managed to save par out of a difficult lie. The Corvallis native is tied for 55th heading into the final round.
Anthony Arvidson turned in a 75 for the second consecutive day, and is tied for 46th with a 221.
Michael Jurgensen carded an 81, as Jurgensen shot 41 on the challenging back nine before the rain halted play Friday. He finished with a 40 Saturday morning.
In the team race, Florida has come back in the last two rounds after opening with a 296 to tie Arizona at 13-under with an 851. The Gators shot an 11-under 277 in the third round to follow up their 278 in the second. Clemson made a charge to get to 862 and a spot alone in third with a third-round 279. Clemson was 16-under at one point in their round.
Individually, Florida's Nick Gilliam jumped up the leaderboard with his 66 to join Arizona's Ricky Barnes in first at 11-under 205. Chris Nallen finished up his second 66 of the tournament on Saturday morning, but took a 77 in the second round and is in fourth.
