LONG BEACH, Calif. - Kristin Huston swam to first place in the 200-yard freestyle Friday and Oregon State set four school records as it remained in second place at the 21-team Speedo Cup women's swimming meet.
Huston's time of 1 minute, 50.61 seconds broke Traci Lamoure's school record of 1:50.91 set in 1998. Suzanne Starkey placed fourth in the 100 butterfly and set a school record in her preliminary race with a time 56.14 seconds to eclipse Bonnie Renwick's 2001 mark of 57.04.
"It was awesome," said OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny, whose team trails only Pacific (Calif.). "We set four schools records and extended our lead over UCSB (California-Santa Barbara). We were a little off this morning, but we made up for it tonight. They really, really swam well."
The Beavers' 800 freestyle relay shattered the school's record of 7:40.43, placing second with a time of 7:31.50. OSU's 200 medley relay also took second place, finishing in 1:44.09 to break the previous school record of 1:44.90.
Birte Steven swam to second place in the 100 breastroke, Mari Embertson took fourth in the 400 individual medley and Suzanne Starkey placed fourth in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 100 backstroke in Friday's events. The Speedo Cup concludes Saturday with six events scheduled.
"Tomorrow, it's all about heart," Podkoscielny said. "It's the toughest day to come through, and there are a lot of important races - we look forward to that."
