CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday afternoon at the hands of Illinois-Chicago in the first game of the Oregon State/Diadora Classic at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The tournament continues tomorrow as the Beavers (2-1-0) host Sacramento State at 2 p.m.
Oregon State appeared to have jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Matt Olsen took a cross from Josh Elbaum and headed it in for a score. However, the official ruled a hand-ball prior the goal and the point was taken off the board.
OSU and UIC (1-1-1) had scoring opportunities throughout the first half, but neither squad was able to capitalize. The Beavers had a flurry of shots from within the goalbox that came within inches of scoring late in the first half, but came up empty and settled for a first-half tie.
"First of all, you've got to give Chicago a pat on the back," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. "They came out here, they worked hard and they got a lot of play out of the midfield. When they got an opportunity to finsh, they took advantage of our mistake."
That mistake came when OSU allowed a corner kick to cross in front of the goal early in the second half. The ball was deflected, and then drilled into the net by UIC's Jakob Stasko at 55:26 for his first goal of the year.
OSU had more scoring chances in the second half from within the goalbox, but UIC's Chris Jamal came up with key saves on his way to nine on the afternoon. OSU's Peter Billmeyer continued his solid play in the net with six stops.
One of the concerns for the Beavers this season has been the team's ability to finish scoring opportunities, a topic which Taylor addressed after the game. "Everybody has got to take a little more responsibility for putting the ball in the back of the net. You can't let all of those opportunities go by without finishing them."
OSU out-shot the Flames 20-13, and had 11 shots on goal to UIC's seven. The Beavers have out-shot their opponents this year 47-37.
Sophomore Aaron McHardy took four shots for the Beavers, while forward Jesse Servin had three shots on goal.
"I think we let one slip away today, we should have at least scored," Taylor said. "But hats off to Chicago for taking care of business and putting their opportunity away.
The Beavers will get a chance for a quick rebound on Saturday afternoon against Sacramento State, a team that knocked off No. 2 Santa Clara last week.
"That's going to be a very good team and a very hard matchup," Taylor said of the Hornets. "We had to expend a lot of energy today, and they got to rest. We'll see what we're really made of tomorrow."
