TEMPE, Ariz. - - The Oregon State University men's golf team shot a final round 7-under-353 and finished second at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships. The second place finish is the best ever for the Beavers at the conference tournament.
"We just played great today," OSU head coach Mike Ketcham said. "This team knew we were one of the three best in the conference talent-wise, and they proved that this week."
Senior Tim Mickelson, who played at Arizona State University for two years, finished second at 13-under 275. He broke the school record for a 72-hole total, which Scott Masingill held for 27 years. Mickelson played the last three rounds 13-under, including a school record- tying 64 Tuesday. He also carded just three bogeys the final 44 holes.
"This tournament meant so much to Tim," Ketcham explained. "This is where his college career started, I'm just so proud of his accomplishments this week."
Mickelson's teammate John Lepak tied for third at 278, the third-best 72-hole total ever at OSU. Lepak matched Mickelson with a final round 3-under 69.
"We came into this tournament with an attitude," Ketcham said. "We struggled during the middle of the season and we knew we were better than we were scoring. This team wanted to prove something this week, and I think they certainly did."
Oregon State concluded the event held at the Karsten Golf Course with a total 1,421. The host Sun Devils shot 1,384, while California was third at 1,428, and Oregon was fourth at 1,432. ASU's 1,384 broke the former Pac-10 Tournament 72-hole record of 1,403 which they set last year. The Beavers led the tournament for eagles with eight, three of those by Eric Dahm, and were second for birdies with 87.
"This team made a commitment to end the season successfully," Ketcham added. "We have recognized what our strengths and weaknesses are, and are playing accordingly. We have an excellent chance to make the end of this season something special."
The remainder of the Oregon State team included Bryan Geiberger was 42nd at 294, and Dahm was 58th at 317. Wayne shot a final round 70, and played the last two rounds 7-under.
Paul Casey of Arizona State won the individual title, for the third consecutive year, at 23-under 265. Casey's 23-under total broke the conference record of 18-under, accomplished by former Stanford standout Tiger Woods in 1996.
The men return to action May 17-20 at the NCAA West Regional in Fresno, Cal.
