LOS ANGELES, Calif. - - John Lepak gave the Oregon State men's golf team a big boost Monday by shooting 2-under for the first two rounds to help OSU into eighth place with a score of 28-over, 596 at the Southwestern Invitational. OSU will have to work some magic over Tuesday's final 18 holes to make up ground on a tough field that features nine top-25 teams.
Lepak, a sophomore, shot a 68 in the second round to equal his season low after shooting a 1-over 72 to start the day at the par-71 North Ranch Country Club. Lepak's 68 was also the low round for the tournament on Monday, and he sits one shot behind Oregon's Ryan Lavoie. Lepak's best finish this year was second at the Northwest Classic.
After firing a 2-over 144, OSU's Eric Dahm is just five shots out of first place and tied for 11th. Dahm had not played in tournament competition since the fall season's Pacific Invitational, where he tied for 12th.
Bryan Geiberger are tied for 71st after shooting scores of 157.
One of the things that OSU head coach Mike Ketcham stressed last week was the need to close the gap between the first and second scores and the fourth and fifth scores. With a difference of 13 shots between the second and third scores, OSU will likely have to trim that margin on Tuesday to move up in the standings.
OSU leads four ranked teams heading into Tueday's final round: No. 12 Stanford, No. 22 Washington, No. 23 Kansas, and No. 24 Oklahoma.
Seventh-ranked BYU is in first place with a six-shot lead over defending Pacific-10 champion Arizona State.
