Swimming Slips To Last At Pac-10s

LONG BEACH, Calif. - - Freshman Paula Finlay became only the second Oregon State swimmer to compete in the finals at the Pacific-10 championships on Friday night in Long Beach, California. Finlay set a school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.39 in the morning preliminary session. OSU's 200 medley relay team of Suzanne Starkey, Finlay, Kristen Martinec, and Arianna Higuera also set a school record with a time of 1:46.30 in the evening session.
"We were better than yesterday," said OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny. "We are gaining experience. The core of the team is still very young."
Kyla Bond placed 17th in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:33.95, while Magda Modelska finished 18th at 4:35.00.
Finlay swam to a time of 1:05.31 in the evening's final round of the 100 breaststroke, and finished eighth.
OSU's 800 freestyle team suffered a disqualification due to false starts, which cost the team dearly, according to Podkoscielny.
Arizona leads the way at the championships with 861 points. California is second, followed by Stanford and UCLA.
Going into Saturday's final round, OSU trails Washington State by 3.5 points.
"We need to attack Washington State," said Podkoscielny. "We have to come out and fight tomorrow. We need to step up to the plate."
