KONA, Hawai'i - Senior Tim Mickelson tied for fourth place overall after firing a one-under 213 over three rounds as the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate men's golf tournament came to a close on Saturday. The Beavers took seventh with a final-round score of 299. It was the fourth-lowest score of the day, as high winds made play very difficult on the Kings' Golf Course.
The rest of the Beaver golfers struggled with the conditions, as no one other than Mickelson shot lower than a 76 Saturday.
"Tim had one of the better performances I've seen in a long time in division-one golf," said OSU head coach Mike Ketcham.
Mickelson's previous best finish was 24th at the Northwest Classic in the fall. A second-round 69 was Mickelson's lowest round of the year. Sophomore John Lepak shot the low round of the tournament for the Beavers with a 2-under 68 in the second round and finished at 3-over 217. Lepak's tie for 13th place was his fourth finish of 13th or better this year. Bryan Geiberger tied for 39th with an 8-over 222, while Anthony Arvidson and Kyle Hudson each carded 231.
"Overall it was a success," Ketcham said of OSU's effort, which saw them finish ahead of three top-25 teams with a score of 23-over 879. "This was the strongest field to date, but we still have things to improve on and we will do so before next week."
Eight teams in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings Top 25 appeared in the tournament. Top-ranked Georgia Tech captured the team title with a 1-under score of 855. Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder took the individual title, beating teammate Matt Kuchar in a playoff. They each finished at 6-under 208, and were two of only six players to sneak in under par for the tournament. The tournament was played on two separate courses over the three days. The Beavers opened the tournament on the par-72 King's Course, then moved to the nearby par-70 Beach Course Friday, and wound up play on the Kings' Saturday.
Oregon State's next action will come Feb. 28-29 at the Southwestern Intercollegiate in Los Angeles.
