TUSCON, Ariz. - Oregon State battled its way to a 10th place finish at the Arizona Ping Intercollegiate men's golf tournament on Tuesday at the par-71 Raven Golf Club in Tuscon, Ariz. Led by Anthony Arvidson's three-round total of 6-under 219, the Beavers held 10th position throughout the entire tournament.
The tournament proved to be a good test for the Beavers - who finished at 887 - as they saw their first competition since finishing in a tie for second at the Pepperdine Intercollegiate back in October. Arvidson, the Beaverton, Oregon native whose second-round par-71 was OSU's lowest round of the tournament, placed 26th. However, only four strokes separated the junior from his third top-10 finish of the year. Seniors Kyle Hudson, Bryan Geiberger, and sophomore John Lepak finished in the middle of a very competitive field. Tim Mickelson, who opened the round with a team-low 72, finished tied for 64th at 228.
OSU head coach Mike Ketcham said of the field before the tournament that "It will probably be one of the best fields to date." Tournament host Arizona's Ricky Barnes ran away with medalist honors after carding a 204, while Southern California captured the victory in the team competition. Barnes was tied with USC's Nick Webb after both fired a tournament-low 65 in the opening round. Webb, however, couldn't keep up the pace and fell to a tie for fourth with Parker McLachlin of UCLA at 2-under par. Webb's fellow USC teammate Nick Jones took second at 5-under, and Han Lee of California finished third at three under.
The Beavers have a little over two weeks to fine-tune their games before heading to Kona, Hawaii for the Taylor Made Intercollegiate Feb. 17-18. Last year at the Taylor Made in Waikoloa, OSU placed 16th out of 23 teams, shooting a season-high 944.
