EUGENE, Ore. - Four Beavers finished with double-figure kills, but the Ducks had four players of their own in double digits as the Oregon volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over Oregon State in the Civil War, presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers, on Friday. Game scores were 13-15, 15-10, 15-5 and 15-7.
The Ducks (7-16, 1-13) snapped a 16-match losing streak, while the Beavers (8-14, 2-12) extended their losing streak to seven matches. Oregon had not won a game since October 5 and had won only won Pac-10 game all season prior to Friday's match.
Angie Shirley led the Beavers with 18 kills and Krista Kinsman added 12. Katrina Nelson and Gina Schmidt each had 10 kills.
But UO's Amy Banducci had 21 kills to propel the Ducks to the win. Halie Mazza turned in 14 kills, while Annie Pogue added 13 and Laura Norton had 11.
"I thought the competitive effort was there tonight, but Oregon was more consistent with their passing and serving so they were able to execute their offense," said coach Nancy Somera. "We're in a situation where our offense is limited, and you throw in a letdown on passing, and we become even more predictable. It was hard to find a way to score."
Oregon had eight aces on the night, including five in the final two games. And OSU's offense also struggled after the opening game. The Beavers hit .182 with 25 kills in the first game, but after that, OSU had just 32 in the next three games. OSU hit .022, .063 and .034 in the final three games.
The match took 2:12 to complete, and game one set the pace for the long match. The first game had 67 sideouts and took 45 minutes to play. OSU opened with an 8-3 lead, but the Ducks came back to tie it at 13-13. The Beavers finally put the game away on an error by Annie Pogue and an ace from Nikki Neuburger.
Oregon regained the momentum in game two and carried it through the remainder of the match. The Ducks capitalized on several Beaver errors in game two, when OSU had just 11 kills and 10 errors. Then, in game three, the Duck offense stepped up and hit .368 with 22 kills.
OSU's offense continued to struggle in the final game, collecting just eight kills with seven errors. While the Ducks had eight kills themselves, they had only four errors in the fourth game.
The Beavers finished the night with a .090 hitting percentage compared to UO's .200 mark. The Ducks outkilled OSU, 72-57, and outdug them, 68-51. UO also outblocked the Beavers, 15-11.
Schmidt led the Beavers with 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, and Kinsman added 10 for her second double-double.
