Steve quarterbacked the Beavers to a 14-5-1 record in his final two seasons. OSU finished the 1967 season ranked seventh and 13th in 1968. He was the team's MVP in 1967 and 1968.
He played nine years in the NFL with New Orleans, Philadelphia, Denver, Los Angeles Rams, and Seattle. He was inducted into the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
He later served as a longtime contributor on the Beaver Radio Sports Radio Network.
