1942 1942 Rose Bowl
- Induction:
- 1988
Due to the blackout on the West Coast because of World War II precautions, the 1942 Rose Bowl was played in Durham, N.C. against the Duke Blue Devils.
The team, led by head coach Lon Stiner, scored a 20-16 upset victory. Tommy Prothro, who would later be the head coach at Oregon State from 1955-64, quarterbacked Duke. The winning score was in the third quarter when Gene Gray snatched a 68-yard pass from Bob Dethman.
Oregon State's other scores came on a Dethman 31-yard pass to George Zellick and a Don Durdan 15-yard run. Warren Simas made two extra point kicks.
The team was inducted into the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
