Ben Stoddard enters his fifth season with the Oregon State men's soccer program in 2018, and his third in the role of associate head coach. Stoddard has been the Beavers' top assistant coach over the last four years, and served as interim head coach prior to the hiring of Terry Boss in December of 2017.
He came to OSU after serving two years as the graduate assistant coach for Indiana Wesleyan University (NAIA).Â
In his first season with the Beavers, Stoddard helped lead Oregon State to the best season in school history, as the team won 12 games en route to its first ever NCAA Tournament win. OSU players picked up some hardware along the way, as senior Khiry Shelton earned All-America and Pac-12 Player of the Year honors, and Timmy Mueller was named the conference's Freshman of the Year.
In his second season with Oregon State, Stoddard helped the Beavers reach a number of new milestones. The assistant coach aided in leading a young OSU team to marquee wins over Marquette and Michigan State, as well as the program’s first win over UCLA in a decade. For their efforts, the Beavers notched a trio of All-Pac-12 honorees, including First Team recognition for forward Timmy Mueller.
Stoddard added five All-Pac-12 honorees following his fourth season, with three on the second team in Jordan Jones, Jalen Markey and Don Tchilao. Seven Beavers were also named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team with Nathan Braaten, Jaime Miralles and Timmy Mueller making the first team cut. Braaten was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team. Jones and Mueller were both selected in the third round of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft, The 2017 year also saw former Beavers David Norman Jr. sign a contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps, while Jaime Miralles signed a professional contract in Spain.
The Beavers had several signature wins in Stoddard's fourth year on the sidelines, including four wins over ranked opponents during the year over No. 17 UNLV, No. 17 Pacific, No. 17 Cal and No. 20 Washington.Â
In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Stoddard is also heavily involved in Oregon State's recruiting efforts, helping the Beavers ink a number of marquee signing classes during his tenure. Under his guidance, OSU has tallied a pair of nationally ranked recruiting classes, including Top Drawer Soccer's No. 6 rated group in 2016.
Stoddard, a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), assisted the IWU men’s soccer program from 2012-2014. He worked in all facets, helping lead IWU to their two best seasons in program history. In 2012 and 2013 IWU won back-to-back regular season conference championships, and in 2013 they also won the tournament championship, which ultimately led to their run to the NAIA Sweet 16. In his two years, Stoddard helped guide IWU to a record of 28-8-7 and a consistent national ranking within the NAIA top 15.Â
In addition to his coaching duties at IWU, Stoddard also served as the U-16 and U-17 boys’ age group director and elite team coach for Carmel United Soccer Club, which is considered one of the premier clubs in the Midwest region. Stoddard also was an assistant coach for the Indiana Fire DA. While an undergrad, Stoddard coached for the Marion Lightning SC, helping guide their U-17 boys team to their first ever state championship in 2011.
Stoddard played soccer for Gardner-Webb University (NCAA Division 1) before transferring to IWU in 2009. He received All-Conference and Academic All-American honors during his tenure with both teams, and served as team captain at IWU. During Stoddard’s collegiate career he also played PDL for two summers with the Cascade Surge (Salem, Ore.) and Northern Virginia Royals. He graduated high school from Darlington School in Rome, Georgia while playing for Chad Liddle at the Darlington Soccer Academy.
Stoddard earned his Master's Degree in Management through Indiana Wesleyan University. He holds a USSF National 'B’ License and NSCAA Premier Diploma. He was selected to the NSCAA 30-under-30 program in 2016.
Stoddard is married to Heidi, who works as an OT at Good Samaritan hospital. They both reside in Corvallis with their dogs, Norton and Scout.Â
