Jose Ortiz was named an All-American, Pac-10 Player of the Year and team Most Valuable Player in 1986-87 when he averaged 22.3 points and 8.7 rebounds to lead Oregon State to the NIT.
The 6-foot-10 center from Cayey, Puerto Rico, averaged 19.8 points per game in his two-year career, which is third on Oregon State’s all-time list. He also ranks seventh in career field goal percentage (.557), fifth in rebound average (8.7) and sixth in blocked shots per game (1.40).
Ortiz was a two-time All-Pac-10 First Team selection, a three-time Pac-10 Player of the Week, a 1987 NABC All-Star and named to the 1985 Far West Classic All-Tournament Team.
He had five 30-plus scoring games, including a career-high 38 against San Jose State, and grabbed a career-best 18 rebounds in a win at UCLA.
Ortiz was selected with the 15th overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz, becoming the first Puerto Rican to be selected. He played 63 games during two seasons in the NBA.
He played in the Olympic Games for the Puerto Rican National Team in 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2004.
On Aug. 30, 2019, Ortiz was inducted in the FIBA Basketball Hall of Fame for a career with the Puerto Rico National Team that spanned more than 20 years.
