The Heisman Trophy winner was the nation’s most heralded athlete after leading OSU to a 1962 Liberty Bowl victory over Villanova. Terry Baker was a unanimous first team All-American in 1962, and in addition was named the Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated, Helms Foundation Award recipient, AP, UPI, and the Sporting News Player of the Year to name just a few. The two-time Oregon State team MVP played in the 1962 College All-Star Game. Baker also excelled in basketball where he helped the 1963 team to the Final Four. He was inducted into the State of Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. His number 11 is the only number retired at OSU. He is (as of June 2009) the only individual to win the Heisman Trophy and play in the Final Four. Baker was the first individual from the West Coast to win the Heisman. He was drafted first overall in 1963 by the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL.
