Six Beavers Named All-Americans
May 31, 2018 | Baseball
The six is an Oregon State single-season record
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Six All-Americans, a school-record.
Â
That's the number of Beavers who received at least one All-American honor on Thursday as both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball released their 2018 All-American teams. Trevor Larnach and Adley Rutschman earned recognition from both; Luke Heimlich and Jake Mulholland from Collegiate Baseball and Cadyn Grenier and Nick Madrigal from Baseball America.
Â
Larnach and Heimlich both earned first-team selections; the former from Baseball America and the latter, Collegiate Baseball. Larnach was also named a second-teamer by Collegiate Baseball.
Â
Grenier and Rutschman are second-team selections, both by Baseball America. Madrigal is a third-team honoree by Baseball America, while Rutschman and Mulholland picked up third-team honors by Collegiate Baseball?
Â
That's an Oregon State single-season record six All-Americans, surpassing the 2006 and 2017 clubs, which had four apiece.
Â
For Madrigal, Heimlich and Mulholland, it's their second consecutive season with an All-America recognition, while Larnach, Grenier and Rutschman have been named for the first time.
Â
Heimlich leads the nation with 14 wins, and his 139 strikeouts are tied for fourth nationally. He sports a 2.49 earned run average, and has issued just 21 walks in 104 2/3 innings. He's also a finalist for the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Pitcher of the Year award.
Â
Larnach gives the Beavers a Baseball America All-American for the second consecutive year – after Madrigal and Jake Thompson in 2017 – as he's batting .324 with 13 doubles, 17 home runs and 64 RBI. His 64 RBI lead the Pac-12 Conference and the 17 home runs rank third.
Â
Grenier, who was also named a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award and is a candidate to become an Academic All-American, heads into the Corvallis Regional with a .335 batting average. He's collected 15 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 42 RBI.
Â
Mulholland is second in the Pac-12 with 14 saves, which is tied for 11th nationally. He is 1-2 with a 2.50 earned run average and has held opponents to a .205 batting average. He has struck out 33 to just seven walks in 36 innings this season.
Â
Rutschman has manned catcher and first base for the Beavers in 2018, and has been an integral part of the team's lineup. The sophomore is batting .391 with 16 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 63 RBI, which tie him for second in the Pac-12, behind only Larnach's 64.
Â
Madrigal pulls in the third team honor despite playing in just 29 of the team's 55 games this season. The junior is batting .395 with six doubles, four triples, two home runs and 27 RBI. He's also a perfect 9-for-9 on stolen-base attempts and has a 1.000 fielding percentage in 132 chances.
Â
Larnach and Madrigal are both semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award. The two, along with Rutschman and Heimlich are also semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy.
Â
Madrigal, Heimlich and Mulholland are the seventh, eighth and ninth Beavers to earn All-American honors in more than one season. They join Jay Dean (1954 and 1955), Cecil Ira (1962 and 1963), Dallas Buck (2005 and 2006), Jonah Nickerson (2005 and 2006), Michael Conforto (2012, 2013 and 2014) and Andrew Moore (2013 and 2015).
