Heimlich is honored for the second straight season and Grenier his first
SAN FRANCISCO – Luke Heimlich has been named the Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season and Cadyn Grenier is the Defensive Player of the Year – the third Beaver in a row to claim the honor – as the league announced its annual awards on Thursday afternoon.
Â
Heimlich becomes the first pitcher in the conference to win the honor in back-to-back seasons since Arizona State's Mike Leake in 2008 and 2009. The two join Tim Lincecum (2004 and 2006) as the only pitchers to be recognized twice since the then-Pac-10 unified prior to the 1999 season.
Â
Heimlich, a native of Puyallup, Wash., leads the nation with a 14-1 record this season, and has a 2.49 earned run average in 104 2/3 innings. The lefty is tied for fourth nationally with a school-record 139 strikeouts.
Â
Over his last seven starts, Heimlich has allowed 31 hits and 10 earned runs in 53 innings, a 1.70 ERA. He has struck out 82 batters to just seven walks over that stretch and is 7-0.
Â
Heimlich is also a finalist for the Pitcher of the Year Award by the College Baseball Hall of Fame and a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy.
Â
Grenier is the third consecutive Beaver to be named the Defensive Player of the Year, joining Logan Ice in 2016 and Nick Madrigal in 2017.
Â
The junior, who hails from Henderson, Nev., has committed just six errors in 55 games this season, totaling more nearly 200 total fielding chances, posting a .970 percentage. He has not committed an error in his last 12 games, and has not totaled one in back-to-back games.
Â
Grenier is also one of five finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, which is given annually to the nation's top shortstop.
Â
Oregon State student-athletes and coaches have earned 15 of the last 30 major honors in the Pac-12 since the 2012 season. In addition to Heimlich, Jace Fry was also named the Pitcher of the Year in 2014. Michael Conforto (2012), Andrew Moore (2013), KJ Harrison (2015) and Nick Madrigal (2016) have been named the top freshman. Conforto (2013 and 2014) and Madrigal (2017) have been named the Pac-12 Player of the Year, while Pat Casey was named Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2017. Ice, Madrigal and Grenier give OSU three Defensive Players of the Year, and give OSU 14 major honors over that stretch.

The Pac-12's coaches vote for the yearly awards, and may not cast a vote for their own players.
