The two are among 25 semifinalists nationally
DURHAM, N.C. – Oregon State juniors Trevor Larnach and Nick Madrigal have been named semifinalists for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced on Monday.
Â
The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the nation's top amateur player. Previous winners include Brendan McKay (2017), Kris Bryant (2013), Bryce Harper (2010), Buster Posey (2008) and David Price (2007).
Â
Oregon State and Florida are the only teams with two players chosen to the semifinalists' list, which includes 25 student-athletes overall.
Â
Larnach leads the Pac-12 Conference and is 13th nationally with 64 runs batted in, which is tied with Dylan Davis (2014) for the third-most in a single-season at Oregon State. An outfielder, Larnach is third in the Pac-12 with 17 home runs – second in a season at OSU – and is batting .328 with 13 doubles, a .656 slugging percentage and three stolen bases.
Â
Madrigal, a second baseman, has been named a semifinalist despite playing in just 26 of the team's 52 games this season. He's batting .435 with a pair of 11-game hit streaks, and has six doubles, four triples, two home runs and 27 RBI. He's also swiped eight stolen bases. Defensively, Madrigal, who hails from Elk Grove, Calif., has a 1.000 fielding percentage on 120 total chances – 51 putouts and 69 assists.
Â
Madrigal is a Golden Spikes semifinalist for the second consecutive season.
Â
Both Larnach and Madrigal were named semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy last week. That honor is also given to the nation's top player as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Â
A Golden Spikes Award voting body, consisting of national baseball media, select professional baseball personnel, previous Golden Spikes Award winner and USA Baseball staff, will vote on the list of semifinalists in order to pick three student-athletes as finalists. Their voting will carry a 95 percent weight of each semifinalists' total.
Â
Fan voting, meanwhile, will take place at GoldenSpikesAward.com, and will account for the remaining five percent. Fan voting started when the semifinalists were announced, and will run through June 3. Fans can vote up to 25 times per day.
