Beavers’ Comeback Evens Series At Utah
March 30, 2018 | Baseball
Â
With the win, the Beavers evened the series with the Utes at one game apiece. The teams will play a rubber match Saturday at 12 p.m. PT – OSU is looking to win its 15th consecutive Pac-12 Conference series.
Â
Trailing 5-2 entering the seventh, the Beavers (21-3 overall, 6-2 Pac-12) put a pair of runners on for Rutschman, who singled between the first and second basemen to make it a one-run game. Three batters later, and after Trevor Larnach and Jack Anderson had walked, Malone cleared the bases with a double down the right field line.
Â
Andy Armstrong followed up the six-run seventh – which was capped off by Michael Gretler's second sacrifice fly of the night – with his first career home run. The round tripper, a solo shot over the left field fence, pushed the Beavers to a four-run lead in the eighth.
Â
OSU starter Luke Heimlich was the recipient of the run support, going 6 1/3 innings. He allowed eight hits and five runs – only two earned – while striking out six. He improved to 6-0 this season.
Â
Dylan Pearce worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in back of Heimlich. He struck out two in his 10th outing of the season.
Â
Malone set a career-high with his first three-hit night, adding singles in both the second and fourth innings. Overall, the Beavers finished with nine hits off four Utah pitchers; Armstrong tallied two for his fifth multi-hit effort of the year.
Â
Jacob Rebar, who picked up the save for Utah (5-20, 2-3) on Thursday, was charged with the loss on Friday. He allowed two runs on two walks and did not record an out, dropping to 0-1.

Clutchman In The Seventh

Â
Moving Up The Record Books
Luke Heimlich finished with six strikeouts, giving him 276 for his career. That pushes Heimlich past Dallas Buck (272 from 2004-06) for fourth all-time at Oregon State. Heimlich now trails only Mike Stutes (287 from 2006-08), Ben Wetzler (291 from 2011-14) and Jonah Nickerson (299 from 2004-06).
Â
And Wins
Heimlich's win marked his sixth of the year and 26th of his career. He's now tied with Nickerson for eighth-most at Oregon State.
Â
Streaky
Rutschman, Jack Anderson and Andy Armstrong each extended deep hitting streaks on Friday. Armstrong dribbled a single down the third-base line in the seventh to extend his streak to 12 games. Rutschman, meanwhile, pushed his to seven games with the two-run single later in the seventh. Anderson waited until the ninth to get his pushed to five games as he singled with one down.
