RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Oregon State rower Devery Karz and crewmate Kathleen Bertko rowed to fourth place in the B Final of the women's lightweight double sculls (LW2x) and 10th place overall Friday morning.
Karz and Bertko came off the line with the pacing with a crew from Romania battling for fourth place covering the opening 500-meters in 1-minute, 53.81 seconds trailing the leading crew from Poland, which went wire-to-wire in first, by more than 1.5 seconds. Sitting fifth after the through 500 meters, the American crew turned it up a notch moving past the German boat, which slipped from second to fifth by the halfway point. From the mid-point on, the U.S. pair improved its time in each of the final 500 meter pieces but could not gain ground on the leaders finishing with a time of 7:29.96 and 10th place overall. The Polish crew, which edged the Romanians, won the B Final with a time of 7:24.34.
Friday's B Final concludes Karz's Olympic competition in Rio.
