Beavers to Race at Portland Fall Classic Sunday

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's rowing team heads north Sunday to race at the 10th annual Portland Fall Classic hosted by Rose City and Station L Rowing Clubs.
"We look forward to going to Portland to make a big OSU showing," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "This is a dry run for next week at the Head of the Lake. It's a fun race and it will be good to get everybody on the water in a racing situation."
The Beavers plan to face off have four eight-man boats in action on the Willamette River Sunday morning.
COURSE: The 5,000-meter course runs behind the east side of Ross Island, ending just before the Steel Bridge on the Willamette River.
SPECTATORS: Fantastic viewing on the sidewalks of Hawthorne bridge or anywhere along the Eastbank Esplanade, admission for this event is free, however parking for this event is available for $10, cash.
RACE TIMES: OSU will race two boats in the Men's Collegiate Div. 1 Varsity 8+ starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by the final two boats in the Men's Collegiate Div. 1 JV 8+ at 8:31 a.m.

As men's crew heads up to Portland, we take a closer look at Heather Thompson, a senior coxswain from Shady Cove, Ore., majoring in biocultural anthropology.
Do you have a specific pre-race ritual?
"I always make sure the boat is in order and all the guys are ready to go but I wouldn't say I have any specific rituals."
What has been your favorite moment as an OSU athlete?
"My favorite OSU moment as an athlete was competing at Pac-12 championships last year. The whole boat really came together and performed at a high level."
If you could play a different college sport at Oregon State, what would it be and why?
"I would want to play basketball because I played basketball from elementary school to high school and I still love the sport."
What do you like best about Corvallis?
"I love the sense of community in Corvallis. People are so friendly and nice. I love that I can say go Beavs anywhere and get a 'Go Beavs' back!"
How would you describe your teammates?
"My teammates are like a family to me. Everyone is very supportive and dedicated. We all are really competitive but find a way to balance that competitiveness with friendship."
How would you describe the coaching staff?
"The coaching staff sets high expectations and really challenges everyone to be their best in all aspects of life. At the same time, they are very fun to be around."
Where are you most excited to race at?
"I'm really excited to race against Stanford in Las Vegas to start the spring season."
Describe a funny or interesting part of studying your major at Oregon State.
"I'm majoring in biocultural anthropology which is a really hands on major and has allowed me to work with human remains."
What would be your favorite vacation destination?
"I love warm, tropical places. So, I would love to vacation in Bali."
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
"In 10 years I hope I'm doing something with my life that will leave the world a better place."
