OSU Takes Sixth Overall at Head of the Charles
October 23, 2016 | Men's Rowing
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Oregon State men's rowing team made a strong impression opening the fall season with a third place finish among collegiate teams at the Head of the Charles on Sunday afternoon.
"It was awesome to sit at the finish line and see our 4+ finishing ahead of Harvard and FIT," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "My scouts on the bridges were telling me how they were crushing it. The guys are pretty fired up, and this was a great race for them."
The Beavers' Varsity 4+ earned a third place finish among the college crews and sixth overall in the CHAMP 4+ category. The Beavers covered the three-mile course in a time of 17-minutes, 28.210-seconds. The two collegiate crews to finish ahead of the Orange & Black boat were California (17:05.602) and Cambridge (17:23.561).
OSU trailed Princeton near Harvard's Weld Boathouse, the second of four checkpoints approximately 1.75 miles in, by nearly a second, but picked up the pace, in the last leg of the race edging out the Tigers by more than a full second.
Oregon State returns to the water next Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Portland Fall Classic.
