CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team went 3-0 Saturday, defeating Western Oregon twice and Southern Oregon once in exhibition matches at Gill Coliseum. All three matches were designated to go only three sets.
The Beavers defeated Western Oregon, 25-16, 25-20 and 15-9, in the first matchup between the teams. Katelyn Driscoll finished with a team-best nine kills and hit .304 while Arica Nassar had eight with a .333 percentage. Darby Reeder pitched in which nine digs while Rachel Buehner was credited with six.
Laura Schaudt put the Beavers up 13-6 in set one with back-to-back kills, and OSU managed to distance itself from there on out. In set two, WOU jumped out to a 5-0 lead but a Nassar kill evened the score at seven. Lila Toner put the Beavers up with an ace at 19-5 and OSU closed it out from there. Western Oregon scored the first two points of set three, but OSU scored the next four, punctuated by a Schaudt kill. OSU took the lead for good at 8-7 and closed out the match on a 7-2 run.
The Beavers then battled Southern Oregon, taking the match, 25-14, 25-10 and 17-15. Schaudt had a team-best 10 kills with Driscoll pitching in with seven. The team hit .315 overall – Schaudt was at .474 and Driscoll at .412. The Beavers held SOU to a minus-.032 hitting percentage and did so with nine blocks.
The Beavers led early and often in set one, finding themselves up 14-4. Haley Clarke posted back-to-back blocks to win the frame. Set two was similar, as OSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead and 14-5 advantage later on. In set three, the teams were tied at six after a kill by Clarke. SOU went up 12-9, forcing an OSU timeout. The Beavers tied it at 13, and OSU battled back from 14-13 and 15-14 SOU leads for the 17-15 win.
Oregon State ended the day with another 3-0 win over Western Oregon, taking the sets by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 15-7. Toner had a team-best 10 kills while Schaudt and Driscoll chipped in with eight apiece. Reeder led OSU with 12 digs.
OSU was down 8-3 in set one but was able to battle back to tie it at 13. A Schaudt kill made it 19-18 in favor of OSU and Clarke ended the set with a kill. Tayla Woods tallied an ace to make it 9-7 OSU in set two after a slow start and Schaudt and Nassar made it 12-10 OSU, which never trailed the rest of the frame. OSU made quick work of WOU in set three, going up 11-2 before Toner tallied two kills in the last three rallies for the 15-7 set win.
Driscoll led the Beavers overall with 24 kills on the day, and hit .254. Schaudt and Toner were close behind with 23 kills apiece, while Clarke had 14. Woods and Nassar had three aces apiece while Reeder finished with 30 digs over the three matches. The Beavers held their opponents to an .018 hitting efficiency.
OSU is back in action Friday with a 6:30 p.m. match against Oregon at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene.
