WACO, Texas –
The Oregon State softball team – making its 13th NCAA tournament appearance – jumped out to a 2-0 lead over No. 11/12 James Madison, but could not hold on. The Dukes came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth before hitting a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Beavers, 3-2.
The Dukes entered the Regional boasting the nation's highest batting average with a .357 mark and starting pitcher Megan Good held a 0.48 ERA, but that did not seem to faze the Beavers in the opening frame. Oregon State started the game with back-to-back singles by McKenna Arriola
and Jessica Garcia
before Natalie Hampton
blasted a two-RBI double to left center to get the Beavs on the board.
Oregon State posted a 13-5 record when scoring in the first inning and a 27-5 record when scoring first entering the week, but could not hang on down the stretch. The Dukes loaded the bases in the fourth before a single up the middle put them on the board. JMU tied things up in the sixth after it hit a pay-off pitch over the right center-field fence.
The Beavers put their lead off batter on base in the top of the seventh after a pitch hit Sammi Noland
, but they went down in order to strand her.
James Madison loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh before knocking a base hit into left field to score the winning run.
pitched the 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and the three runs. The lefty struck out five in the loss and walk three. Natalie Hampton
recorded the two RBIs for the Beavers, while five others generated a hit.
The Beavers will play tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. PT against the loser of Kent State and Baylor at Getterman Stadium.
