Chalk up another pair of honors for junior Luke Heimlich
and redshirt sophomore Jake Thompson
The two help comprise a list of 25 semifinalists for the 2017 Dick Howser Trophy, which is awarded annually by the NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) to the nation's top player. Colleges nominate players for the award, and candidates are voted on by members of the NCBWA.
Heimlich, who is a three-time Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week this season, carries the nation's best earned run average, at 0.76, into the series with Washington State, which starts at 4:05 p.m. PT on Friday. A speech communication major, he is also on the watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, which is given by USA Baseball to the nation's top amateur player.
Thompson, meanwhile, was the NCBWA's Pitcher of the Month for April, and is tied with Loyola Marymount's Cory Abbott for the most wins nationally with 11. He has a 1.11 ERA – third-lowest nationally – and opponents are batting just .174 against the right-hander in 89 innings. An economics major, Thompson was named Academic All-District 8 by CoSIDA and is eligible to be an Academic All-American.
Oregon State is one of four teams with two players on the semifinalists list – joining Texas Tech, Missouri State and Louisville. Heimlich and Thompson also comprise two-thirds of the Pac-12's representation.
Finalists for the 2017 honor will be named June 9, with the winner announced on June 16.
Oregon State returns home for the start of a three-game series Friday against Washington State. First pitch for the opener is slated for 4:05 p.m. PT.
Friday's series opener will air live on Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Oregon, Pac-12 Washington, Pac-12.com and via the Pac-12 Now app.
