Varsity 8 Paces Beavers at IRA's Day 1
June 03, 2016 | Men's Rowing
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Three Oregon State men's crews rowed at the Intercollegiate Rowing (IRA) Championships on the opening day of the national championship regatta Friday on the waters of Mercer Lake in New Jersey.
“The Varsity 8 was pretty good today,” head coach Gabe Winkler said. “That crew stepped up and is getting better with each race. This is a deep field and to race up front was good for them.
“But it was a frustrating day for our two boats and it is disappointing to see them finish where they did. The 3V was close but came up on the short end. Still all three of our boats can still beat the spots they were seeded.”
Oregon State's Varsity 8 crew, ranked No. 20 in the nation entering the weekend, opened the day in the fourth heat rowing to fifth place. Facing No. 4 Washington, No. 5 Brown, No. 12 Syracuse and No. 13 Dartmouth, the Beavers covered the course in a time of six-minutes, 3.710-seconds pulling in ahead of Hobart College.
The fifth-place finish in the heat advanced the Beavers' V8 to the repechage stage where they came in behind No. 7 Cornell and No. 9 Boston U. and well ahead of Temple. OSU improved it's time in the second race of the day by nearly nine seconds, turning in a time of 5:54.840.
In the Second Varsity 8, Oregon State fell off the pace in heat racing recording a time of 6:16.380 to finish fifth behind California, Wisconsin, George Washington and Northeastern.
In the first repechage, the OSU 2V8 showed improvement but still finished six seconds behind Hobart for sixth place with a time of 6:14.860.
OSU's Third Varsity 8 posted a time of 6:09.390 in its heat to pull in with a fourth place finish behind Washington, Boston U. and Cornell but ahead of Syracuse.
In the afternoon's repechage, the Beavers' 3V8 raced near the front of the pack holding third place with 300-meters to go, but Navy's crew outsprinted OSU to the tape. Oregon State's time of 6:11.400 was good for fourth behind California, Yale and Navy and ahead of Drexel.
The Beavers' V8 races again on Saturday in a semifinal at approximately 6:30 a.m. PT. The 2V8 and 3V8 have already advanced to the Third Final on Sunday morning.
