Get to know: Stephanie Merwin

Over the next several weeks leading up to the Oregon State softball season opener, we will feature a new member of the softball team. Stephanie Merwin is a freshman infielder from Richland, Washington and is majoring in mechanical engineering.

Why did you choose Oregon State?
I wanted to go to a school with a strong engineering program. I also loved the coaches and the beautiful campus.

What do you enjoy about your major?
I've enjoyed the math and science classes that has come with my major so far, as well as the challenges, problem solving, and hands-on activities that I tackle in my engineering classes.

What do you like most about playing softball?
I like the complexity of the game and the thrill that comes with competing.

What is your favorite thing about playing for coach Berg?
I love playing for Coach Berg because she is so knowledgeable about the sport and is someone who I can look up to and talk to about anything. But my favorite thing is how she always keeps the game fun while making sure we get the criticism that we need to grow as players and as a team.

What are the team goals for this season?
The biggest one is to go to the College World Series, but we have a lot of goals that lead up to that, from keeping the energy up in the dugout, to coming out as one of the top teams in the Pac-12. From maintaining communication on the field, to taking each game one pitch at a time.

What is your personal goal for the season?
My personal goal is to push my limits every day and be the best at my job on the team. Whatever the coaches believe is the best job for me, I am going to be the best at it and work harder than anyone else for it to help us reach our potential as a team and exceed expectations.

What athlete did you idolize growing up and why?
I grew up idolizing my cousin, Travis Buck. He worked extremely hard, was always humble, and taught me how what I put in to the sport is what I'm going to get out of it.

What age did you know you wanted to play softball in college and what made you realize that?
I realized I wanted to play softball in college when I was a freshman in high school because I loved the sport so much, and I couldn't imagine my life without it. I loved all of the blood, sweat, and tears that went into the work and I wanted to be the best player that I could be.

What song/band is most likely to be playing on your phone?
Twenty One Pilots or Panic! At The Disco

Do you have any pregame rituals or traditions?
I like to put my hair up in the same way and listen to a set of songs to help me relax and get focused.

What reality show could you see yourself being a part of?
The Amazing Race

What is the best thing about living in Corvallis?
Being in a small, beautiful town that is full of life and adventure.

What is your biggest phobia?
Letting people down.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love a lot of outdoor activities such as hiking, backpacking, and kayaking to name a few, but I also really enjoy playing other sports like tennis and basketball, and I love draw, paint, and read.
