Women's Rowing Wins Four of Five at Gonzaga

March 20, 2011

SPOKANE, Wash. -
The Oregon State women's rowing team earned wins in four out of five races despite rough weather conditions Sunday morning at Gonzaga. Four varsity boats and the lead novice boat rowed to victory against a strong headwind and in 30 degree weather.

"It was nice to get some more wins under our belt, but I think we have better racing in us," head coach Emily Ford said. "All of our boats struggled early to establish rhythm. Once we hit our stride, we were able to generate some speed, but we'll need to work on putting together a more complete race as we prepare for San Diego."

All of OSU's varsity boats struggled to find their rhythm early in their races but seemed to lock in as they moved past the opposition.

The Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 boats faced a depleted roster for the Bulldogs and rowed to open water wins. The V8 covered the windy course in 7-minutes, 51-seconds, 12 seconds faster than GU. The 2V8 finished in 7:50, 35 seconds ahead of the competition. OSU crews finished first-second in the Varsity 4 race with the Beavers' A boat traversing the course 8:38 and the B boat in 8:52, 17 seconds before the Bulldogs' boat reached the finish.

For the novices, the First Novice 8 beat Gonzaga by 12 seconds after racing the 2,000-meter course in 8:00. The Second Novice 8 was the only Oregon State boat to fall to Gonzaga coming across the finish six seconds behind with a time of 8:25.

The Beavers return to competition at the San Diego Crew Classic April 2-3.
