CORVALLIS, Ore. -
Junior outfielder Adrienne Alo collected Oregon State's lone hit as the No. 8 ranked Beavers were shutout by No. 2 ranked University of Arizona, 9-0, in five innings on Saturday in front of 887 fans at the OSU Softball Complex.
Arizona (34-7; 8-5 Pac-10) showed why they are the No. 2 ranked team in the country, using a 3-run home run in the first and second innings to take a 6-0 advantage before Oregon State (37-10; 10-4 Pac-10) had a chance to react.
Six of the Wildcats' 11 hits went for extra bases and junior All-American pitcher Alicia Hollowell held the Beavers without a hit until Alo's lead-off single up the middle in the fifth inning. The game ended when Arizona second baseman Callista Balko made a diving catch of Brianne McGowan's line drive and tossed it to first for a double play.
Beaver pitcher Amy Klever (3-3) suffered the loss while throwing the first four innings. Sophomore Ta'Tyana McElroy struck out one in one inning of relief.
Oregon State wraps up the regular season home schedule against Arizona on Sunday. Seniors Kelly Petersen and Alana Mendoza will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Beavers are searching for their first victory against the Wildcats in Corvallis since 1989.
