Jim Gilstrap is in his fifth season at Oregon State University and third in his current tenure. He is in his first year as the running backs coach after spending the four previous seasons as the offensive line coach.
His 2004 line helped Beaver quarterback Derek Anderson and the offense achieve several records. The offensive line was well represented in postseason honors with Doug Nienhuis earning first team All-Pac-10 Conference and Matt Brock honorable mention.
Gilstrap's coaching career began in 1964 at Southern Illinois University, before moving to Case Western in Cleveland for the 1965 and '66 seasons, and Edinboro State for 1967 and '68. He spent the next five years at Illinois State, then in 1975 returned to Edinboro. In 1977 he moved to the then Big Eight Conference with Kansas State, spending two years. From 1978-80 he was the offensive line coach at his alma mater, Western Michigan.
His first head coaching assignment came at Fort Hays State in Kansas in 1981, where he led the program to a three-year mark of 20-11-1. He jumped to the professional ranks in 1984 as defensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, he later switched to the offensive line coach. From 1987-90 he was the offensive backs and receivers coach for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.
His first assignment with Mike Riley came in 1990 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, helping the team to the Grey Cup title. He followed Riley to San Antonio for two seasons as the offensive line coach, before returning to Winnipeg for the 1994 season. In 1995 he was the head coach of the Ottawa Rough Riders, and in 1996 as an assistant for the Hamilton Tiger Cats.
When Riley left OSU after his first tenure at OSU, Gilstrap made the short move to Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., to serve as an assistant athletic director and coach. He spent the 2000-01 seasons as offensive coordinator at Tulsa and the 2002 season as offensive coordinator at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
Gilstrap has bachelor's degrees (1960) in English and physical education from Western Michigan. He lettered three years for the Broncos, playing center. He lettered in football, wrestling and baseball at Washington Clay High School in South Bend, Ind.
Jim and his wife Barbara have four daughters, Bethany, Brianna, Brittany, and Brandy.
